We’re working on being mindful in our choice between pointed and flexed foot as stylistic choice in dance. We also have several series and workshops designed specifically for intermediate to advanced level students.
Point or Flex: the choice is yours!
Point & Flex Month is all about stylistic choices in pole from the knees down, and building foot and ankle strength. Some moves in dance certainly do require a pointed ankle for safety reasons, while others require a flexed foot. We will explore the difference, and help you build the strength for both.
In addition, we will be discussing proper foot engagement to avoid cramps, and using a flexed foot as a deliberate, stylistic choice. All bodies are built a little different, so we will be discussing anatomy of toe and foot point, and what stylistic choice is best for you.
For more information on why we made the switch in this monthly theme last year from “Point Your Fucking Toes Month,” check this blog post from Marlo Fisken from July of 2020.
Upcoming Specialty Classes & Series
Acro Chair Dance
Saturday, August 12th 12:00-1:30pm
In Studio Only
Add Acrobatic Chair Dance to your aerial repertoire in this 90 minute introductory class!
This class will focus exclusively on Acro Chair tricks, rather than sexy chair dance for yourself or a partner. We will be working on balancing and inverted tricks, and will put them together for a short flow.
It is highly recommended that you complete Beginner Chair Dance, Chair Dance, or have prior hand balancing or aerial experience before taking this class.
Leggings are required for class, and knee pads are recommended if you have them. Please feel free to bring heels if you are already comfortable in them. There will be an opportunity to try out the flow in heels at the end of class.
Space in this class is extremely limited so that the instructor can give students adequate attention and spotting during tricks.
This class is $25 per person.
Belly Dance 101
Tuesdays, August 22nd-September 26th 6:30-7:30pm
In Studio & Online
During the 6 weeks you will learn all base belly dance movements, and finish the session with a mini dance!
Belly Dance 101 is created to give brand new students a solid foundation to continue on in our weekly belly dance class. Students wishing to review basics are also welcome.
This is a 6 week class. We highly recommend starting with week 1 so you do miss a single shimmy! Please contact us before you register if you can’t make it to all six weeks.
We are offering both an in studio and online option for this course. Please make sure that you select the correct option when registering.
This class is $75 for all six weeks, and is included on all Unlimited Memberships and Dance & Fitness Flex Passes.
Polesque (Burlesque/Pole Fusion)
Mondays, September 11th-25th 7:15-8:45pm
In Studio Only
Grab your heels and join Eliza Sidecar for Polesque!
In this three-week series you’ll take your burlesque skills to the pole and learn some floor-based pole moves to enhance your burlesque. From posing and pole walks to flow moves and floor work, Eliza will show you how to create burlesque-inspired pole combos and how to use the pole in a striptease!
Prior pole experience is not required; heels are recommended.
THIS SERIES IS CURRENTLY WAITLISTED. Your card will automatically be charged if you move off of the waitlist.
This class is $55 for all three weeks, and is included on all Pole Flex Passes and Unlimited Passes.
Butterfly to Ayesha
Tuesdays, September 12th & 19th 7:15-8:45pm
In Studio Only
Turn your spit grip upside down! Butterfly and Ayesha require the same skills so you can start learning shortly after you start getting upside down on the pole. But there are variations of Butterfly that won’t help with Ayesha. Unfortunately, many students learn those variations first, to then later struggle with Ayesha. Set your progressions up for success!
This specialty class is a deep dive covering what you need to know to progress on nailing a textbook Butterfly that also sets you up for a solid true grip Ayesha. We will start with the anatomy which reviews the key muscle engagements, and the biomechanics where you will learn the theory about how the gravitational and leverage forces come together for balance. We will look at common alignment and engagement errors, and how to correct them.
Then we will spend some time on the poles, beginning with assessment and practice on Butterfly looking at the entry from both outside leg hook, and inverted caterpillar. We will then move on to shape variations in that grip that bridge toward building and improving the core bracing and balance needed for Ayesha.
Each student’s current progress will be assessed, even if that is working on the start of a Butterfly, and suggestions given for improvement. Strength and Conditioning exercises will also be given, also with exercises that you can do when you are away from a pole. Students who are working on Ayesha and already have Butterfly are welcome. This is both a Butterfly and an Ayesha class. I will give each skill we discuss the appropriate portion of class time based on the current skill levels of the students in attendance during class.
Pre-requisites: You MUST have either a solid outside leg hook (from either an inversion or a “walk down” from Jasmine to get inverted), or you can have a solid inverted crucifix (where you can place your hands in true grip position and push your hips up to “sit on the ceiling” in the position that is the beginning of a caterpillar climb.)
Do not worry if you have not started working on Butterfly officially as long as you have the pre-requisites above. Please contact Roxi if you aren’t sure about this class.
This class does not cover Handsprings or Ayesha grip variations.
The class is $35 for both weeks, and is included on all Pole Flex Passes and Unlimited Passes.
