Take Care of You: Restorative Yoga Practices for Difficult Times

It’s a challenging time to be in the world. This workshop with CED yoga instructor Missy Grieco (CYT-200) will include active and restorative asana, breath practices and a brief introduction to the philosophy of the yoga tradition to help you cultivate and access stillness in both body and mind.

We will move and rest, write, and talk together. The session concludes with a guided yoga nidra meditation, a somatic practice intended for deep rest.

Everyone is welcome and no prior yoga experience is required.

Mats and blocks will be provided; please bring a journal and a bolster if you have it (we will have some at the studio for your use too) and anything else you would like that will support you!

This class is donation based, all of which will go to Preterm Cleveland.

Point & Flex Month is all about stylistic choices in pole from the knees down, and building foot and ankle strength. Some moves in dance certainly do require a pointed ankle for safety reasons, while others require a flexed foot. We will explore the difference, and help you build the strength for both.

In addition, we will be discussing proper foot engagement to avoid cramps, and using a flexed foot as a deliberate, stylistic choice. All bodies are built a little different, so we will be discussing anatomy of toe and foot point, and what stylistic choice is best for you.

For more information on why we made the switch in this monthly theme last year from “Point Your Fucking Toes Month,” check this blog post from Marlo Fisken from July of 2020.

Upcoming Specialty Classes & Series

Acro Chair Dance
Saturday, August 13th 12:00-1:30pm
In Studio Only

Add Acrobatic Chair Dance to your aerial repertoire in this 90 minute introductory class!

This class will focus exclusively on Acro Chair tricks, rather than sexy chair dance for yourself or a partner. We will be working on balancing and inverted tricks, and will put them together for a short flow.

It is highly recommended that you complete Beginner Chair Dance, Chair Dance, or have prior hand balancing or aerial experience before taking this class.

Leggings are required for class, and knee pads are recommended if you have them. Please feel free to bring heels if you are already comfortable in them. There will be an opportunity to try out the flow in heels at the end of class.

Space in this class is extremely limited so that the instructor can give students adequate attention and spotting during tricks.

This class is $25 per person, and this with an Unlimited Pass can use one of their workshop towards this class.

High Heel Mastery
Wednesday, August 31st 5:30-7:00pm
In Studio Only

Whether they are 1/2 an inch or sky high, walking and dancing in heels is a skill you probably weren’t taught, or were afraid to practice much for fear of looking silly. We welcome you to our judgment-free, inclusive environment to learn and practice. By the end of this class you will walk out more confidently in your high heels.

You will learn about adjusting your body posture and weight distribution in order to feel balanced, and how this might change depending on the type of heel you are wearing (stiletto, platform, pump, wedge, etc). We will

go over the differences in the human stride between flat foot walking and high heel walking, and the various ways we can shift the movement through our bodies using the pelvis as a focal point of movement. We will also go over stretching and strength training exercises to lessen the risk of twisting an ankle or developing repetitive strain injuries due to high heels.

Throughout the class we will practice walking in various scenarios including up and down stairs, as well as going out for social dancing.

Beginners welcome!

This class is $25 per person, and this with an Unlimited Pass can use one of their workshop towards this class.

THIS CLASS IS CURRENTLY WAITLISTED. Your card will automatically be charged if you move off of the waitlist.

Pole Performance Building Series
Wednesdays, September 7th-28th 6:00-7:00pm
In Studio Only

This series is for anyone who would like to put together their first pole performance piece but doesn’t know where to start, or you could be someone who wants to learn more about how to improve an idea or a piece you have already created. You could be preparing for public shows, studio recitals, or for the self-expression that comes from moving your body to a piece of music that has meaning to you. Any style of pole dance is welcome, from adult themes to all ages.

Over the 4 weeks each student will work with a song of their choosing. The students will work in a collaborative environment, helping each other out with ideas under the guidance of the instructor. By the end of the course, you will have all the elements and more confidence to continue building your piece to a full working choreography. Beyond the 4 weeks, you there will be opportunities to continue working on it, rehearsing, and making it performance ready.

During the 4 weeks we will go over various topics such as song mapping, stage balance, how many tricks is too many, working with multiple poles, considerations for interacting with different audiences, costume choice, storytelling through song and movement, and more. We will work with moves you already have, so new pole moves won’t be taught, but there will be plenty of exercises where we take your current pole, floor, and/or dance skills and look at them in different ways to fit your performance theme and purpose.

Many people often think they can’t create a performance until they have tons of pole tricks, and especially the aerial and inverted ones. This is not true. It really isn’t about having all the tricks. Captivating performances come from students of all levels of pole skills. You do not need to have any inversion or aerial moves at all! The course is ideal for level 3 and up so you are familiar with various terminology and skills, though level 2 students are welcome to take it for a challenge.

This class is $70 for all four weeks and is included on all Unlimited Memberships. Please contact us to register with a Flex Pass.

Other Announcements

Group Order of Pleaser Shoes through Cleveland Eclectic Dance
(order deadline Friday August 5th)

It’s usually about this time of year that some students have gotten the high heels bug. After Bring Sexy Back July that’s completely understandable.
We are putting together a Pleaser Shoes order. Order deadline Friday August 5th.

  1. Go to https://pleasershoes.com/ to browse through the catalog. (DO NOT order on this site.)
You are not limited to just the Pleaser line. You can browse through Demonia, Bordello, or any of the lines of shoes they make.
The price I will charge you typically is as at least $10 cheaper than what you’ll see on this website.
  2. Private Message CED on Social Media or email directly to roxi@clevelandeclecticdance.com with your choices. I’ll need style number, color, and size. If you aren’t sure about size, we can chat about it. Pleasers do tend to run a little small, but it can also depend on the type of shoe you are getting. I can usually help you figure out which size if you don’t already know for Pleasers.
  3. I’ll let you know what’s in stock in your size and what the CED price will be. You then give me the thumbs up and I’ll order with the group.
